Cargo trailers are a convenient and affordable way to haul all kinds of cargo from place to place. But there are many other ways you can use these trailers, including as campers! If you’re tired of tent camping and you’re not currently able to afford a typical recreational vehicle, but you’ve got a cargo trailer, you can convert that trailer into a camper for not too much money. Here are some strategies to follow when you want to undertake that process.

1. Establish a Budget

Of course, converting your cargo trailer into a camper isn’t going to be completely free. You’ll have to build a budget and save up some money in order to do it. How much money you’ll need depends on how elaborate your modifications will be. Some cargo trailers can be converted into a camper for a mere few thousand dollars, while others may require a much higher investment. Determining how much money you can afford to spend in advance will help you stay within your means and not be blindsided by unexpected costs.

2. Figure Out Which Features You Want

While determining your budget, you’ll want to make note of what features you want to add to your cargo trailer. If you intend to camp solely at campgrounds where restroom and laundry facilities are available, then these may not be priorities for your camper. The most important features will be somewhere to sleep and a place to store belongings out of the way.

If you want to go off-grid, then you’ll need to add bathroom facilities, holding tanks and solar panels for power.

3. Determine the Layout

Next, you’ll want to figure out how to place all the features in your cargo trailer so that everything is easily accessible and that you and your fellow campers are comfortable. If you intend to bring several people along with you, more of the layout will need to be dedicated to sleeping berths. Try installing fold-down beds or building loft beds to help save as much space as possible.

For cooking, if you don’t have space to install a full kitchen, you can simply bring a grill along or plan to cook over a campfire. You’ll still need a place to store food and cooking supplies, though. If you want to camp for longer, you’ll probably need to prioritize comfort.
