You probably get a great deal of usage out of your trailer much of the time. However, you may not always need to use it, and that means you’ll need to store it. While you could certainly just park your trailer in a parking lot or driveway or on the street for days, weeks, or months on end, that option may not be the most secure or convenient way of storing your trailer. Here are some suggestions on how to safely store your trailer when you don’t need it for a while.

Choosing a Storage Spot

First, you should think about whether it’s more practical to store your trailer indoors or outdoors. Here in Florida, we don’t have to worry about really cold temperatures or heavy snow, but we do have a lot of heat, humidity, and storms. All of those weather conditions can do some damage to your trailer if it’s stored out in the open.

If you can find a carport or sheltered outdoor storage space, this is best. Investing in a sturdy cover for your trailer will also help protect it from weather and vandalism when it’s stored outside.

Do you have a place to store your trailer indoors? You'll need to make sure that it’s wide enough to tow the trailer into it, with sufficient ceiling clearance and space to move around the whole trailer. A locking garage, shed, barn, or storage unit is a very secure option, as these structures can protect your trailer from all kinds of harm, including inclement weather, vandalism, theft, pest infestation, and debris.

Elevating Your Trailer

When storing your trailer, it can be helpful to elevate the trailer off the ground to avoid putting pressure on the tires. You can use several sturdy jacks to elevate the trailer, then rest it on concrete blocks or wooden beams that can support the trailer’s weight so that your tires remain in good condition. You can also remove your tires and store them somewhere else if you don’t intend to use the trailer for several weeks or months.

Lubricating Parts

Finally, your trailer can suffer from corrosion to its various moving parts while it’s in storage, so it’s helpful to apply some grease to the axle bearings, suspension, and hitch while your trailer isn’t in use. A good lubricant will help keep parts moving so that they aren’t stiff and liable to become damaged when it’s time to use your trailer again.
