Strategies For Preventing Trailer Theft
Trailers are popular targets for thieves, whether they’re interested in the cargo or just want to steal the trailer itself. Luckily, there are a number of strategies you can employ in order to make your trailer less susceptible to thievery. This guide from Glenn’s Trailer Sales will outline a few of those strategies.
Change Your Trailer's Appearance
An unmodified trailer is more difficult to identify if stolen, which makes it a more tempting target for thieves. You can use bright neon hues, your company’s colors, or whatever else you prefer. Just make sure that your trailer stands out and can be readily identified. If painting your entire trailer sounds like too much work, a sticker or streak of paint can do as well.
Storage Techniques
Ideally, you should always store your trailer out of sight and behind a locked gate. If you can’t lock up your trailer, try to at least make sure no one can see it. If you don’t have a secure location available for long-term storage, you may need to rent out a space in a commercial facility.
Parking Techniques
Even if you have no choice but to park your trailer in an area where it can’t be locked away or hidden from sight, you can still park it in a manner that will deter thieves. Well-lit, high-traffic areas have more potential witnesses, so parking your trailer in these areas will help keep thieves away. If possible, reverse your trailer against a wall or fence or park a piece of equipment or another vehicle in front of it. This will make it harder for thieves to hitch up your trailer without putting in considerable effort.
Get Trailer Locks
Trailer locks come in several varieties. One example is hitch locks, a two-part lock that prevents anyone from hitching the trailer to a different vehicle. In order to steal the trailer, a thief would have to steal the tow vehicle as well! Wheel boots are another great trailer lock option. They clamp around your wheels to keep them from rolling. They’re difficult to remove and make a good visual deterrent. Just make sure that any wheel boot you use fully covers the wheel lugs and can’t be sawed off or pried open.
